This is a bit sprawling, but it touches on the topics of a recent marketing conversation. The four authors listed here are some of the huge success stories, one very recent (Fan Fiction Writer) and the other three forged over the last few years in the crucible of Amazon by giving away their early work for free. Think of it as a ‘loss lead’ on steroids for authors.

One Direction Fan Fiction Writer Gets Six-Figure Book Deal
Hocking’s published work, originally self-published, consists of My Blood Approves, a vampire romance series; the Trylle Trilogy, which covers a teenage girl’s journey of self-discovery in an urban fantasy setting; and Hollowland, a zombie novel. The New York Times characterized her novels as “part quirky girl-like-Hocking characters, part breakneck pacing, part Hollywood-style action and part bodice-ripping romance – they are literature as candy, a mash-up of creativity and commerce”.
In March 2011, Hocking signed her first conventional publishing contract for four books, at a price of two million dollars, with St. Martin’s Press. It concerns her new young-adult paranormal series called Watersong. Book one, Wake, was released in August 2012. All three books in her previously self-published Trylle Trilogy were also sold to St. Martin’s Press, and have been re-released from January–April 2012.
J. A. Konrath
Konrath is a big advocate of self-publishing and for self-promotion, believing that writers must play a large part in marketing their own books. He’s also known for having an outspoken view on the publishing industry, blogging about topics such as 2012 accusations by some industry pundits that Amazon endangered book sales.
Konrath graduated from Columbia College in Chicago in 1992 and spent the next 12 years garnering close to five hundred rejections for nine unpublished novels. His tenth book, Whiskey Sour, was picked up by Hyperion in 2003 and was the first in a series featuring Lt. Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels of the Chicago Police Department. He’s since published dozens of short stories and articles, been translated into eight languages, and edited an anthology called These Guns for Hire for Bleak House Books. In 2010 the seventh book in the Jack Daniels series was picked up for publication by AmazonEncore. Konrath currently lives in Schaumburg, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago. J.A. Konrath teaches writing at Dupage College, Illinois.
