OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A man with a rifle opened fire at a busy shopping mall Wednesday, killing eight people before taking his own life, police said. Five more people were wounded, two critically.
Shoppers and employees ran screaming through the mall and barricaded themselves in dressing rooms after hearing gunfire. The gunman was found dead on the third floor of the Von Maur department store.
Employees and shoppers at Von Maur said they huddled together inside the store and barricaded themselves in dressing rooms and other offices for at least half an hour while they heard dozens of shots.
Police received a call reporting a shooter about 1:45 p.m. and arrived six minutes later. Most of the victims were inside Von Maur, said Omaha Police spokeswoman Teresa Negron.
She said police believed the shooter used a rifle, and may have come to the mall in a vehicle. They believe so far that he had no accomplices.
