Flickr Filtering Trouble…

A response written on Gail Orenstien’s Flickr Blog:

Awesome data, Gail. d_nurv sent me a link to this page and the resulting discussion is also eye opening. I appreciate and understand the issue here.

There are many factors involved, some relative to the ‘walled garden’ approach to internet access, and others to create G rated ‘walled gardens’ Disney’s new website was lambasted by critics uopn it’s recent launch as being too restrictive www.techdirt.com/articles/20070102/113639.shtml
and yet those restrictions designed to make it ‘kid and family’ friendly has created great success.

I think Flickr is trying to search for a system that can allow for both G rating as well as ‘adult’, a difficult proposition in this Wild West of new Social Networking. There are alway going to me those elements that ‘game’ the system.

In any ‘Free’ society, there has to be a balance between ‘Freedom’ and ‘personal responsibily’.I have written and ranted quite a lot over this subject over the last year on Flickr. I was briefly ‘censored’ until I relabled some of my content, and only recently have been un-NIPSA’d, so that my pics can be found in ‘open search’ So I have been there, done that. An aside, I have really been a big fan of your stream, Gail, Kudos !

My attraction to the Flickr community has been because Flickr is an ‘Adult’ community using the nature of attraction based on aesthetics. The interaction has largely been polite, respectful and somewhat empathetic.

The recent discovery of ‘factions’ within Flickr pushing an agenda to sanitize ‘content’, trying to push the direction of ‘acceptable’ Flickr photographs to pics of puppies and flowers is disturbing, to say the least: tarky7.com/

But it is an event that we as a community need to enforce and report abuse to the admins of Flickr like any other abuse. The only way we can keep Flickr and ‘adult’ and ‘open’ community it to be part of it and fight for our rights as hard or harder, giving voice to the ‘rational’.

Jumping ship only means there are less hands left to protect the rights that artists have fought and died for throughout history, namely, the right to free self expression.

New Feud Brewing at Flickr

The notions that Flickr has about the dividing line of painting and photography are certainly quaint, don’t ya think. Pre-Photoshop and silly. I studied painting, commercial Illustration and Industrial Design and did Graphic Design production work during my summers. I only started assisting when I did because working in restaurants to support myself as an actor in NYC became too tedious.

And that is how I became a photographer. hhmmm. So , where does photography and painting separate in my life ? I started taking picture in my teens and I shot slides cause I had a technique projecting slides of portraits onto board mounted on the wall and drew into them with pencil to ‘draw’ very accurate and stylish portraits of people. A modern Camera Obsura. So where is the separation ?

In the mid 80′s my whole portfolio was made up of SX-70′s which I had used Caran Dache crayons to draw and paint on….hhhhmmmm…so where is the separation ?

New Sadish FanBoy..

Sadish, the designer of this current template NigaRila, has designed some of the most aesthetically pleasing themes I have found from the open source WordPress community. I just finished an email exchange with him about working out some of my implementation bugs on this blog. I bought the template a couple of days ago in my work for another client’s blog and the ease of functionality made using this word press template a breeze. I am not sure of the final look and feel that this blog will be, but I am adding a link to his main site in case someone in the wordpress community finds my posts. At the risk of sounding silly, I have always been on the lookout for the next great web designer, and so far I think Sadish ‘gets it’

BlueHost down !

I went to log into my control panels to work on this and another blog this morning only to discover my new hosting company BlueHost was down. Nuthin like starting off your morning coffee with a side of FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt). I called tech support as well as wrote out a bitch email to the company. They responded quickly and I was appeased, but since I am moving a few domains over to this hosting company it represents a big commitment on my part. The fact that they got back to me within the hour gives me faith that they are investing in the future, but I have been down this road before. Only time will tell.

Very Cool ! Hemingway. This blog theme.

Hemingway, the WordPress theme by Kyle Neath. Brilliant ! I was testing this blog using the Cameron Moll Grunge theme, which had a nice red and yellow target in the graphic at the top. But this Hemingway theme I discovered by accident on the stimuli.ca site. And I think it will suit the needs of the gallery well. Very cool. I found the stimuli site through a search in the Flickr API group due to my need to integrate this blog with some sort of photo serving site. I am a shameless Flickr fan and cheerleader, cause it has really given me the experience of a true Web 2.0 (Folsonomy)community. The stiuli site exposed me to the new plug in they have created called slickr.

Outsider art is really just the drek produced by drunk depressed peasants.

Well, this Blog looks like absolute shite right now. I am working out my personal issues as I crack the knuckles and dust off the keys and start working in HTML, PHP and the native tongue of this wacky and robust blog platform.

Since no one will read it for a while, until I get the Google adwords links routed, I really don’t care !

Flickr is a lot more fun, but this is a paying gig. Whatever…

Too Late to Wrestle this one…

Gotta crash, but it has been an interesting ride so far. Trying to solve the Flickr RSS feed that integrates with word press is like solving a puzzle without knowing what pieces exist and where to find them. For those in search of ready answers (and if anyone finds this blog, it’s so new) Here is the skinny from hours of my time spent this weekend: Slickr Gallery(AJAX Flickr plugin for WordPress),
plugin for WordPress, FlickrRSS WordPress, and finally, Flickr API Services. There is some great information and I am not sure yet of the names of the WordPress Players that made this all possible, and even though I have not been able to get it all working just yet, Thank You !

Tomorrow is another day, and the work done this weekend on the outsider art gallery, ChurchStreetArt.net and this blog will bear fruit soon.

WordPress can be a bear !

I am writing this with a bit of exhaustion. The night is ending and I have been working on this for a few days now. First, I completed the rough outline of ChurchStreetArt.net. After going through the initiation of deciding which blog software to use in an hosted venue, (MoveableType or WordPress) I went with WordPress due to it’s open source aspect. Having been following the trend I voted for OpenSource. I love the concept of living in a future where I don’t have to buy into the proprietary camp of both application development as well as open source operating systems. I love my Ubuntu laptop and the new trend by Goolge and others to create free applications accessed by web browsers.
